Not only did my mother have lumbar surgery in her forties due to an accident as a bus driver in Denver, but I too was in an automobile accident at the age of fifteen which caused damage to my cervical spine. By the age of nineteen, surgery was recommended, and since I was attending the University of Colorado, Denver majoring in biology with the intent to go to medical school, I figured surgery was not an option. The only treatments provided to me for pain relief were physical therapy, chiropractic treatments, and various massage techniques. These helped some, but nothing long lasting; couple days of relief at most. In reviewing all that was done, I thought that perhaps if I focused on posture; on stretching areas that were tight and strengthening areas that were weak, that perhaps I could get some better results. I had NEVER worked out before; I was a science geek, not a gym rat! When I started to learn anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and immunology, I figured “if the body can heal then I would do all that I can to avoid surgery at the ripe old age of nineteen."
This initiated my journey to learn all I could to be pain free without medication. I became a personal fitness trainer in the hopes of instructing and helping others to understand their bodies, externally and internally; what I discovered as a trainer is that most people have muscular imbalances. These imbalances can cause various levels of pain, and if there is some type of accident in combination with an imbalance, there is not just injury pain, but underlying issues that need to be addressed in order for proper healing and pain reduction, or hopefully pain elimination.
The next logical step for me was to learn massage therapy, as it seemed to help me the most along with stretching and strengthening. I was privileged enough to be trained by some very knowledgeable instructors, that fueled my desire to learn and understand more about the VAST field that really is massage therapy. Currently, I specialize in Orthopedic Massage, which is a combination of Injury Massage, Sport Massage, Deep Tissue (without pain), Acupressure, and Russian Massage.
I encourage anyone reading this to please explore massage therapy as well as increase your understanding of how your body works and heals. Do a little homework, not just what the modality is, but also ask questions of the therapist; we are here to help you.
Some other massage “modalities” to look into are: Lymphatic Drainage, Cranial-Sacral Therapy, Healing Touch, Movement Therapy, Stretch Therapies (myo-fascial stretch), Neuromuscular Therapy, Neurokinetic Therapy and Rolfing, to name a few.
